State agency collecting debt

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The state's new Obligation Recovery Center is scouring the landscape looking for money owed to individuals and state agencies.

South Dakota Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels says the legislature authorized the start-up which launched in July.

Michels says there's always "some hiccups in determing what people owe and what's going to be handled internally versus turned over to other collection agencies."  He says the administration is going to ask legislators to continue the oversight.

Michels says the Center is benefiting from a lot of cooperation.

He says the Center is starting to see people make payments, not only to individuals that were victims of crime but also payments made because of fines.  He says there is now some real teeth into the collection process.

The lieutenant governor says there's little information on how much has been recovered.

He says it's still early in the system.  The Center will be reporting to the legislature when the session begins in January.  But he says the administration believes the effort is functioning as planned

Delinquent residents failing to pay taxes or child support can not apply for a car title or driver's or hunting licenses if the debt is not paid.
