SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A 15 year veteran of the South Dakota Highway Patrol is charged with grand theft for allegedly stealing money while employed as a trooper, according to South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley.

47 year old Brian William Biehl of Platte was arrested on one count of grand theft by law enforcement of seized property, a class 4 felony punishable by up to ten years in the penitentiary and or a $20,000 fine.

Colonel Craig Price, Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, says "while we cannot comment on the on-going criminal case, it is important for the public to know the South Dakota Highway Patrol prides itself on being a trusted public servant. Police officers are given great trust and responsibility, and for that reason we are held to a higher standard."

"These allegations are serious. We are reviewing our policies and procedures to determine if there is anything we can do to prevent this from ever happening again."

Biehl was a trooper for a little more than 15 years, working in the Chamberlain area. He is no longer employed by the Highway Patrol, which is part of the Department of Public Safety.
