SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Minnehaha County is taking applications for about a dozen, volunteer positions on the police reserves.
Doug Blomker with Emergency Management, says reserves supplement full time law enforcement including police, sheriff's deputies, Highway Patrol and Game, Fish and Parks.
Blomker says reserve officers are armed and have the arrest powers of the agency they're with.
He says successful applicant will go through a mini-police academy that starts in January and continues until May. Reservists help patrol major events like JazzFest, Hot Harley Nights and Hot Summer Nights. During those months where there are no major activities reservists will accompany officers on patrol.
Blomker says about 50 reservists have gone on to full-time law enforcement careers.
Applications are being accepted until September 9th.
