SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Authorities say that the loaded handgun found in a Sioux Falls school on Friday belonged to a school custodian.

Captain Blaine Larsen says students at the CTE Academy were never at any risk.

"We think it was just a bad decision on this employee's part and we don't believe there was any threat at any time to student safety."

The custodian, Joseph Croal, has been charged with bringing a gun to school and making a false report. Court documents indicate that when first questioned, Croal claimed that the gun belonged to someone else. Croal claimed that he found the gun in a donated car in the schools auto shop. Police Spokesman Sam Clemens says that claim hasn't been confirmed, but they're looking into it.

Sioux Falls Schools Superintendent, Brian Maher, on Monday, praised the police for the concerted work that ended a weekend of speculation.

"Who had that handgun? We didn't know at the time, would it be an adult or a student. And what was in the mind of the person who put that gun in the school."
