Is Division I part of the "fabric" of Augustana University's future?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- There hasn't been much talk lately since initial reports about Augustana University jumping from Division II to Divison I in the NCAA.

However, according to athletic director Josh Morton, consideration continues.

"It's part of a whole process, it's part of an institutional look," Morton said. "It's not just saying, 'All right athletics, tell us what you think and we're going to do it.' It's how does it fit into the fabric of Augustana and where does Augustana want to be?"

Augustana last looked at going D-I in 2006.

Augustana has won national championships at the Division II level in men's basketball, men's baseball, women's softball, and women's cross country.

Morton says they're happy with that, but. . .

"We want to be an elite Division II institution," Morton said. "We want to win NSIC (Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) championships. We want to win and compete for national championships. So, yes, it is something that we're looking at."

The Summit League would be the likely landing spot should the Vikings choose to go D-I. They would join former fellow Division II North Central Conference members South Dakota State, the University of South Dakota, North Dakota State University, and soon, the University of North Dakota.
