SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The five state highway workers that kept a troubled young man from killing himself on Interstate 90 in Sioux Falls are being called heroes, but they don't look at it that way.
"I guess we don't really consider ourselves heroes. You just step in there and there's a person in need so you help him." says Curt Theisen, the head of the road crew that just happened to be in the right place at the right time on Wednesday.
Theisen says his crew quickly spread out, some diverting traffic while others tried to talk the young man out of jumping from the Marion overpass bridge. When he jumped, they tried to break his fall, but he hit the pavement and immediately jumped up. Theisen says he was attempting to run into traffic, when they tackled him.
"You're standing there and you can look into his eyes. You don't know what his mental thoughts are, but it can't be good."
They may not consider themselves heroes, but the Sioux Falls community is giving a big shout out to Theisen, Gary Steinhoff, Chris Peters, Adam Feistner, and Jordan Doane. What started out as just another day on the job, turned into something else.
