SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- An Iowa woman is suing her Sioux Falls surgeon and his medical practice for removing her kidney and not the mass on it.

Dena Knapp was to have her right adrenal gland and an "associated mass" removed by Dr. Scott Baker of the Surgical Insitute of South Dakota on October 5, 2016. Instead, Baker removed her right kidney and left much of the mass inside her.

More of the story from Knapp's complaint filed in federal district court in Sioux Falls yesterday. Her allegations:

12. Baker was advised by the Avera McKennan pathology department on October 5, 2016, that he removed Dena's kidney and failed to remove the adrenal gland and associated mass.

13. On October 7, 2016, Baker told Dena he had not heard from pathology about the issues that were surgically removed.

14. While she was still in the hospital, Baker advised Dena her kidney had been removed but did not inform her he failed to remove the adrenal gland and associated mass.

15. On October 11, 2016, three days after Dena was dismissed from the hospital, Baker called and told her part of the adrenal gland was still inside and he "did not get everything."

16. During that same conversation, Baker told Dena an additional surgery was required.

17. Dena subsequently went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and had the adrenal gland and associated mass removed.

Knapp asks for at least $75,000. The defendants have not filed their answer to the complaint yet.
