SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- A Gear Up Scandal-related trial in Sioux Falls has gone to the jury.
Closing arguments were made Friday in the trial of Stephanie Hubers, accused of helping cover up a big embezzlement scheme by Scott Westerhuis at the Midwest Education Cooperative in Platte.
Hubers is a former employee at the Cooperative, where Westerhuis worked as business manager. Westerhuis killed his wife, four children and himself in 2015.
The Westerhuis embezzlement and subsequent tragedy put the Gear Up Scandal on fast forward.
Gear Up is a federal program designed to help low-income students prepare for college careers. In South Dakota, many Native American students were eligible. The cooperative in Platte was helping with the program.
