SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- WIth the Fourth of July right around the corner, the topic of underage drinking is again being discussed. Intellicheck is a company that creates technology for instant and accurate identification authentication to combat underage drinking.

Intellicheck CEO Bryan Lewis states that eleven percent of all alcohol consumed in the country is by underage drinkers, with sixteen percent of teens admitting to binge drinking. With drunk driving being the cause of one third of automobile deaths of teens, Lewis hopes his company's efforts can combat the problem. With the upcoming holiday, Lewis says the results of binge drinking and driving could be "disastrous."

Lewis speaks to the growing issue of fake ID's that are able to pass a visual inspection by law enforcement. Lewis says many false ID producers can create ID's that look accurate, but will not pass a barcode scan test.

Using an app that can be installed on smartphones and point of sale systems, law enforcement and businesses can easily check the validity of an ID. Lewis says 3.4% of ID's they scan come back as fake, indicating the scale of the problem.

With over thirty three law enforcement agencies and thousands of businesses, Intellicheck hopes to expand and be able to help prevent underage drinking. They are working with politicians to expand and educate about underage drinking and drunk driving.
