SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- First things first.
If you were worried about the fate of the iconic Sioux Steel sign near Falls Park, your fears should be allayed.
CEO Scott Rysdon says the big yellow, black and white sign will stay on the property near the falls after it is redeveloped.
Rysdon says one of the first buildings at the site built in 1918 might also be repurposed in the redevelopment.
That building is built on top of Sioux quartzite as its foundation.
These were a few of the things members of the media learned on a tour with Rysdon on the Phase portion of the Sioux Steel redevelopment. The area is approximately three acres in size and goes from the entrance of Sioux Steel off 6th Street then north toward Falls Park.
In a prepared statement, Sioux Steel says that they "have long had a vision for repositioning their headquarters site as a vibrant multi-use community dedicated to the history and the current needs and aspiration of the residents, businesses, and civic organizations of Sioux Falls."
As part of that, Sioux Steel will hold public meetings on what to do with the private project. Rysdon says the company wants to be a good neighbor.
The company will have more information available about the process at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Josiah's Cafe.
Sioux Steel also says they are talking to "many potential users." The company says that "any proposed uses will work in conjunction with existing public resources, such as parking and seating areas, in support of the Levitt Shell and with public riverfront and park accessibility."
When asked about the area being a site for a new baseball stadium, Rysdon said they'd listen to proposals but it would likely be one of many things they might consider.
Rysdon says Sioux Steel employees about 100 people at the downtown steel fabricating facility. He wouldn't say where the company is looking to move their operation.
