SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Hundreds of students filed out of Roosevelt High School today to honor the 17 people killing in the Florida school shooting.
Most Sioux Falls schools had events today - events that were authorized by school officials.
This was National School Walkout Day. However, it was not recognized by the Sioux Falls School District.
According to an RHS student KELO.com News spoke with, he estimated that 85 percent of the student body participated in the optional event where students signed posters behind the high school. The RHS student said the optional event was organized by students with the permission of the school.
The student said this was followed by the students returning to the gymnasium, engaging in 17 minutes of silence, and the reading of the Parkland students' names. A different Roosevelt student, Alex Cook, gave a short speech about the shooting.
