SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  After more than an hour of public input and discussion among the council, the city will not go forward with the sale of bonds to fund a new municipal building.

Comments were hot and heavy on both sides.

Councilors Christine Erickson and Greg Neitzert both emphasized that this isn't the end of the discussion, they just wanted more time to consider all the options.

The 5-3 decision came despite the pleas of those working in city buildings, city councilors and even Augustana University President Rob Oliver offered a comment.

Oliver says the land where the building is planned to be built was purchased in 2007 by the city. He calls that a visionary and forward thinking decision.  He adds that it was in future contemplation of the project and the city's needs.

Neitzert says he'd like to see everyone get behind one plan.  He says that isn't happening yet in the discussion of new administration building.

Councilor Rick Kiley was one of the no votes who said there's been plenty of due diligence on the project and enough talk.

Councilors Michelle Erpenbach and Rex Rolfing cast the other no votes.

Mayor Mike Huether will provide a response to last night’s City Council vote regarding the bond ordinance for the City Administration Building at a later date. He recognizes the interest and importance of the project and also celebrates the due diligence and sacrifice put forth by the City’s project team and the City Council.
