Sioux Falls School Board President against Sentinels

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Sioux Falls School Board President Kate Parker doesn't think South Dakota's largest school district should adopt an armed sentinel program.

The program, approved for South Dakota schools back in 2013, has been adopted by only two districts, but the sentinel idea is being talked about again because of the latest school shooting in Florida.

Parker says teachers and other school officials have enough to do with the students in an emergency.

"Hiding in the closets, hiding away from doors and windows. That's what I would rather our teachers focus on, not, sort of, add to the chaos."

Parker says the school district already has a good security program, with armed resource officers and locked entries at every building. You have to buzz and identify yourself to get inside.

Another idea Parker doesn't like is metal detectors at the doors.

"I'm not sure that's a solution either. We don't want a police state for our kids."

Parker says the shooting made her ten-year-old frightened to go to school, but she told him that the District does everything in its power to make the schools safe.
