The day Captain 11 went on strike

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- In KELO's early years, Dave Dedrick was one of the hardest working people in broadcasting.

He was the weatherman on TV, a disc jockey on radio--and of course--Captain 11, the kids' show host on TV. Dedrick was working day and night, even though he sometimes was pre-recorded in the evenings.

But even the Captain had his breaking point, according to long-time KELO-AM DJ, Jon Michaels.

"He actually went on strike once because everbody wanted Dave Dedrick to do their commercials," Michaels said. "He said, 'Wait a minute! I'm doing too much work here!' He actually put his foot down. He said, 'You're actually going to have to pay me.'"

Dedrick, according to KELOLand TV, was Captain 11 starting in 1955 and performed the role for 41 years. He also signed on KELO-TV in 1953. He was on KELO-AM before that time and continued as a DJ for much of the 1950s and 60s.

The story is part of KELO-AM's 80th anniversary celebration.
