TEA, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Fire crews in Lincoln County are gaining the upper hand against a grass fire that began Thursday evening near Tea.
Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman says crews have set a perimeter around the fire, using any and every means necessary. "We had a piece of farm equipment digging a boarder around part of it. Some of it will have to be worked with hand crews." Timmerman says conventional firefighting apparatuses are out of the question due to wet ground around the blaze.
"Right now it's just getting the last part of the fire out without getting anyone injured. So far we've been able to [keep] the fire from getting next to any structures" Timmerman told KELO.com news as of 7:30 Thursday night. He adds the biggest hurdle crews will have in snuffing out the flames is overnight wind gusts of 25 to 30 MPH.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Timmerman adds there is no immediate danger to any people or property.
The size of the fire is unclear. It was first reported early Thursday evening near the intersection of 273rd Street and 470th Avenue.
