Huether wants to go out "rock solid"

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether says a big priority in his final year in office is to leave South Dakota's largest city in a "rock solid" position, financially.

"And we're going to do that..and that's just kinda that fiscal conservative nature that I have," Huether tells KELO Radio's It's Your Business Show with Bill Zortman.

"We've accomplished a lot. We've made sound investments, but there's more to do."

Huether and City Council have been challenged by the impact of the weaker farm economy and slowing tax revenues. The Mayor has had to tighten the city budget belt moving forward. There will be no 'bells and whistles' projects during his final year as mayor.

Huether says that population growth over his seven years has been like squeezing the city of Watertown into Sioux Falls with all the need for extra infrastructure.

And, yes, Zortman asked Huether the inevitable question: What will you do after you leave office? Huether and wife, Cindy, are still discussing the future. No decisions yet.
