Virtual refugee reality in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS. S.D. (KELO AM) You can pretend to be a refugee for 90 minutes Tuesday outside Lutheran Social Services in downtown Sioux Falls.

One of the organizers, Clara Hart, herself a former refugee, says there will be a simulated refugee tent camp with guides to explain the experience.

"You will have these tour guides show you, take you from one booth to another and these people who are going to explain in those different tents are former refugees." Hart tells KELO.COM News.

This virtual refugee reality will mark World Refugee Day.

It will be from 1130 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at 300 E 6th Street in Sioux Falls.

Hart says that no one wakes up in the morning wishing to be a refugee.

The number of immigrants, many of them refugees, in Sioux Falls is about 12,000, according to U.S. Census data. The immigrant population has doubled since 2000.
