WATERTOWN, S.D. (KELO-AM) -- The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol spent the better part of Saturday in Watertown conducting a “remote exercise.”
Wing Commander Colonel David Small says the North and South Dakota wings participated in the exercise that included a mock search for missing downed aircraft and persons, as well as aerial photography.
Col. Small said their groups of volunteers aren’t considered first responders and only go to work when requested. That happened recently after when a private plane sent out emergency signals in Northeast South Dakota.
He says that all of the Civil Air Patrol’s planes are Cessna aircraft and that, in fact, the Civil Air Patrol is Cessna’s largest customer worldwide. He said nine aircraft, including six from South Dakota and three from North Dakota, participated in the Saturday drill.
Eleven members of the Sioux Falls Composite Squadron participated in the training.
