SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) The Sioux Falls free summer meals program for needy children is getting wheels.
The School District is teaming with Celebrate Church, Feeding South Dakota, and the Sioux Falls Community Foundation to outfit a truck that will take backpacks full of food to the kids in needy communities.
Assistant Schools Superintendent Jamie Nold says its a variation on the theme of the old ice cream truck idea.
"For a lot of these kids with these families, the basic necessity is not ice cream. It's cereal, vegetables, meat, milk...." and Nold says the food truck will be able to reach children, who for whatever reason, are unable to make it to the normal feeding locations.
The food truck idea comes from Lincoln High School Student Katie Patrick, who Nold says, will be helping drive the truck to reach the kids. Children can sign up on the school district website, which will also include a schedule of the truck route.
Thousands of children in the Sioux Falls School District are eligible for free or reduced price meals.
