SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) The Law Enforcement Torch Run across South Dakota to benefit Special Olympics is off and running.

The Torch Run stepped off Monday morning in Sioux Falls with many miles to go.

"We are actually going to be hitting 30 different communities across the state in the next four days. We come into a town and we get all our law enforcement officers in the area, and our special athletes and do a run through the city." says Todd Bradwitch with South Dakota Special Olympics.

Law officers and Special Olympians help carry the torch together to raise money and awareness in each of the cities they visit. The torch will be carried into the opening ceremonies of the South Dakota Special Olympics Summer Games in Spearfish, Thursday, May 18.

Its a special run for some special kids.

"Lot of our officers are doing it this year for the first time they've ever done it. Our athletes that have come with us this year, this is the first time they've gotten to do the Torch Run, spending time with our officers statewide." says Bradwisch.

The first Law Enforcement Torch Run in South Dakota in 1991 raised over $5,000. Last year the Torch Run helped raised well over $500,000.
