County considers changes to EMS system

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Minnehaha County Commission got first look yesterday at a comprehensive study of the county's emergency medical services and will hold public meetings and work sessions in an effort to implement the recommendations.

Commissioner Gerald Beninga says the Fitch and Associates report has 28 recommendations.

Beninga says the immediate priorities, in the short term, are generally procedural while the medium priorities are more along the lines of personnel and equipment.

The report concluded EMS response times are slightly above benchmarks for similarly sized rural communities.

The are 13 fire departments, 6 EMS providers and 1 communication center in the county emergency response system.  The report also notes that first response is also provided by the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office "which is an extremely valuable asset to the system."

The entire reports is available on the Minnehaha County website.
