Jumping Eagle to make initial court appearance

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Irving Jumping Eagle is in the Minnehaha County Jail and will make his first court appearance today in the murder of his wife Alicia Jumping Eagle.

Lieutenant Mike Coldwill says Jumping Eagle was injured after he crashed his wife's cars into an I-29 bridge in Deuel County.  He fled the scene on foot but was caught without incident by county authorities. He was initially treated there before being taken to Brookings for further medical attention.

Coldwill says some of the evidence in the case deal with statements Jumping Eagle made to the medical staffs in Deuel County and Brookings.  He says that's when investigators decided to charge him with murder and manslaughter.

Coldwill says the investigation continues.  Detective still have to process the car the Jumping Eagle was driving when he hit the bridge pillar.  He says there are still some interviews left with certain witnesses.  He says "we're (police) in a really good position with the case at this time, we feel."

He the husband and wife have a child who was staying with a family member at the time of the weekend murder.

Alicia Jumping Eagle suffered several stab wounds to her head and chest.
