Transgender locker room bill withdrawn

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The sponsors of the transgender locker room bill withdrew their measure this morning before the Senate Education Committee.

Committee Chair Senator Jim Bolin was informed this morning by the bill's author that the measure was to be withdrawn.  Bolin says rules acknowledge that a bill can be removed prior to the first committee hearing in the house of origin with the approval of the presiding officer.  Bolin gave his approval for withdrawal.

Lobbyist Roger Tellinghuisen, with the Human Rights Campaign, asked Bolin if the measure can be reintroduced later in the session.

Bolin said there is a potential that someone else could reintroduce the measure.  Bolin also added that his response to any member who would "seek to engage in such an activity would be that that would be an extremely unwise decision."

But the bill could resurface later in the session.
