Proposal to remove sales tax on food

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Democrat Representative Ray Ring of Vermillion says he'll introduce a bill to cut the sales tax on food.

Ring says his plan is to put a zero percent sales tax on food and raise the state tax rate by about .35% so it's revenue neutral

Ring says the state's tax structure is regressive.

He says the structure puts a higher burden on the bottom 20% of the state's population and a lower burden on everybody else.

Two years ago legislators increased the gas tax and last year they raised the sales tax for teacher's salaries.

Ring knows there's little desire for another tax debate. He says he's well aware that there's not a lot os support for his proposal but he wants to keep the idea in people's minds

Ring wants the state to do a comprehensive tax study.
