Representative Wollman resigns

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - State Representative Mathew Wollman resigned from the South Dakota House after admitting last week that he had sexual relationships with female legislative interns.

Wollmanfaced review by a special House committee to determine if he violated House rules.

Wollman's resignation is effective immediately.

In a letter he submitted today, The former District 8 Representative from Madison, says "no matter what successes a man or woman achieves, it is their failures that they remember the most."

He went on to say that he doesn't condone what he has done and that he has "embarrassed this institution that I care so deeply for, my party, my family, my friends and myself."

Wollman says he had "put much thought" into what these coming weeks would entail, and although he feels better for coming forward and tellin what is the absolute truth of the matter, that the trust of the people isn't with me 100% as I wish it was.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard issued the following statement today regarding the resignation of District 8 Rep. Matthew Wollmann.:

“I think Rep. Wollmann made the right decision, and I will act quickly to name a replacement so District 8 is fully represented during the session.”

House leaders issued a statement saying they will be meeting over the coming weeks with legislators, current interns and legislative staff to discuss any improvements that can be made in the legislator and employee concerning appropriate standards of conduct and the proper reporting of potential violations of these standards
