SIOUX FALLS,S.D. (KELO AM) - To combat the methamphetamine epidemic, the state plans setting up a group of six law enforcement personnel dedicated to go after drug traffickers.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says the group will consist of four Highway Patrol Troopers, a special agent with the Division of Criminal Investigation and an intelligence analyst with the DCI.
Jackley says this group is charged with interdiction focused primarily on the interstates. The goal is to target major drug traffickers and conspiracies and to work with local drug task forces and agencies.
He says the group would begin its work in July. Jackley says it's a project partnership between the Public Safety Department and the Attorney General's office.
He says Troopers are involved in the unit because the focus will be on the interstates and that's where they work. Jackley says one of the hot spots for meth transportation is the intersection of I-90 and I-29 at Sioux Falls.
Jackley says the unit could expand in the future. But he says as the force works with local agencies, and if it proves successful, the hope is that it will get help from chiefs, sheriffs and other areas.
