SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota's budget work began this morning in Pierre and legislators must have liked hearing from an agency requesting 7% less than last year.
Housing Development Authority Executive Director Mark Lauseng says savings will come from the Governor's House Program for income-qualified families.
Lauseng says the reason for the decrease is in the reduction of the number of Governor's Houses that are planned to built in the next fiscal year. The agency is lowering the number of expected homes from 150 to 125 a year. Lauseng says that's been the sales average over the last three years.
Prison inmates from the Springfield facility build the Governor's homes.
The project allows individuals to live independently. Household income can't exceed $44,030 for couples or individuals and $50,320 for families of three or more.
House prices are $42,900 for a two bedroom house and $49,200 for a three bedroom house. Lauseng says they build more three bedroom homes.
