SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The record for Sioux Falls building permits got even larger at the end of the year finishing at close to $702 million dollars.
Director of Planning and Building Mike Cooper says the record valuations are in largely private investments.
This year's record was driven by a total of 2,647 dwelling units, homes and apartments, that were permitted.
Cooper says when compared to cities of similar size around the Midwest, Sioux Falls development activity is pretty significant based on population and city limit size.
The construction valuation for building permits reached $701,851,489 last year. That's the first time the $700 million mark was reached. In 2015, the record was $676.3 million and the precvious record in 2104 was $619.5 million. In 2013 the mark was $588.2 million, four straight years of record construction.
Cooper say projects submitted to the city for permittng this year are close to $100 million.
The top three for 2017 include Gage Brother's new headquarters at $19.3 million, the City Administration Building at $18.4 million and the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites on Elmwood Golf Course at $9 million.
