Phillips Avenue touch-up

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The city wants to replace water and storm sewer lines along Phillips Avenue between 6th and 9th Streets beginning next year.

Dena Knutson with Engineering says the underlying infrastructure hasn't been touched since the early to mid-60's.

Knutson says the utilities are operating normally, but she says the life cycle of the street is starting to show some major wear.  It's more cost effective, at this point, to upgrade everything at the same time.

She says the city is considering replacing utilities between 8th and 9th Streets next summer but adds that the plan is funding dependent, it's not written in stone, yet.

The city has talked to all the adjacent property owners and businesses for their input on the project.

The city is holding an open house tomorrow afternoon at five in the Downtown Library to offer information on the rehabilitation project.

She says tomorrow's open house will feature the amenities of the plan, the street view of everything. That includes planting trees, bump-outs at the corners, waste containers and benches. They won't get into the detail of design portion because engineering hasn't gotten into that yet.
