SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls will not plow city streets and instead will rely on warm ground temperatures and this weekend's solar snowplow.
Street Manager Galyn Huber says he's going to rely on sanders with blades.
He says the conditions were perfect for not plowing. He ground temperatures at 45 degrees and the weekend forecast calls for sun and temperatures in the 30's. He says there's a lot of water in the snow and the chemical works well in melting it.
Huber says the game plan this afternoon is have crews jump onto the secondary routes in town and put chemicals on those. Then, he says, sanders will go around schools and follow that effort with getting into residential streets. He says residential streets are treated with a mixture of sand and 10% salt.
He says tonight's street crews will watch for icing on bridges as temperatures drop into the mid-teens and northwest winds slow to 10 to 15 miles per hour after midnight
Huber says by not calling a snow alert, the city saves about 140 thousand dollars.
