Voting lesson learned the hard way

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) There were some disappointed Augustana University students on election day in Sioux Falls.

They had hoped to vote for the first time, but their voter registration forms are missing.

Government Studies Professor Emily Wanless says the kids signed up to vote during a big registration drive on campus and all the forms were mailed.

"For whatever reason, again that we don't know, the South Dakota ones that were mailed to the Minnehaha County Auditor's Office are not showing up as registered," Wanless told KELO Radio on Tuesday.  She said, maybe, they were lost in the mail, but the forms filled out by Augie students from other states made it through just fine.

About 25 students will have to wait for another election to vote, but it is a learning experience.

"I told them they will have a great story to tell when people ask them about their first voting experience and they'll be able to say: lesson learned," said Wanless. Next time, they may want to register on their own.
