SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Feeding South Dakota is seeking sponsors for the BackPack program that weekly feeds over 3,400 kids facing food insecurity in the Sioux Empire.
Jennifer Stensaas says a sponsorship is a donation of $150 which provides one child a package full of food that they can take home over the weekend.
Stensaas says the kids, and their families, have food to eat over the weekend so that when they're ready to return to school on Monday their tummies are full and they're ready to learn and grow. She says it's impossible to learn when kids are hungry.
Stensaas says sponsors can include individuals, churches, civic groups or businesses.
Feeding South Dakota's BackPack program addresses the food needs of children when school is not in session. This program fills the gap by providing at-risk kids with nutrious, easy to prepare foods during the weekends and holidays.
BackPack fills a significant gp for 3,450 children in the Sioux Empire who experience food insecurity. The forecast is that the program will soon need to feed 3,600 children.
