Halloween safety tips

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Fun abounds on Halloween but kids, parents, homeowners and drivers must prepare and practice important safety tips.

Brad Goodroad with Sioux Falls Fire Rescues says drivers must slow down Monday night.

He cautions drivers to be especially alert in residential neighborhoods and take the time to look for kids at intersections, in medians and alleys.  He says popular trick-or-treat hours are between 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be particularly alert for kids during those hours.

Goodroad says parents should tell kids to walk on sidewalk, cross street only at corners and don't let them eat candy before inspecting the haul.  He says kids 12 and under should not be alone and have them carry glow sticks or flashlights.

Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape, choose face paint and makeup instead of masks, which can obstruct a child's vision.

Examine all treats before eating and eat only factory-wrapped treats avoid homemade treats made by strangers.
