SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - At last count, there have been 141 arrests at the Dakota Acces Pipeline protest in south central North Dakota.
Late yesterday morning authorities engaged protesters occupying private property and after a six hour campaign every one of them had been evicted.
A North Dakota Emergency Services spokeswoman says one woman pulled out a .38 caliber pistol and fired three shots narrowly missing a sheriff's deputy. Officers did not return fire and there were no serious injuries reported.
According to Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney, who has been working as incident commander, protesters threw rocks and threatened officers while on horseback.
Protesters lit tires, timber and other debris as the confrontation heated up. According to the Morton County Sheriff's office protesters also set fire to three pieces of construction equipment.
Law enforcement responded by firing bean bags and used pepper spray to disperse the crowds.
Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier says the camp was empty by nightfall.
It's been a month's long protest against the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline that would transport oil from North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa to Illinois.
