SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) Sioux Falls has its first fire station library, a unique effort to encourage more children to read.
The little free library is behind Fire Station Number 3 on South Minnesota Avenue.
"It looks like a little fire station and it's open all the time so kids and adults can come, open it up, see what's in there, take one, leave one," says Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Chief Jim Sideras.
Chief Sideras says, working with Siouxland Libraries, they hope to add little free libraries at other fire stations around town.
"In areas where kids have a tougher time getting to a library that this might spur them to read more," Sideras tells KELO Radio News. Firefighters will maintain the buildings and Siouxland will provide the books.
“In addition to promoting literacy, it is our hope that the Fire Station Libraries will help build a sense of community in the neighborhood,” says Jodi Fick, Assistant Director of Siouxland Libraries. “We’re delighted to be part of Sioux Falls’ first civic Little Free Library.”
