SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A Yankton Middle School math teacher was named last night South Dakota Teacher of the year during ceremonies in Oacoma.
Beth Kaltsulas has taught in the Yankton School District for 30 years. She considers mentoring a vital component of the profession and runs a daily math academy for students to receive math tutoring before and after school.
Kaltsulas piloted a math class that seeks to keep students who qualify for special education services in the general education setting.
Secretary of Education Dr. Melody Schopp say the award recognizes the work of one teacher in particular, but the profession as a whole. "Every day, teachers make an impact in student lives," Schopp says.
A statewide panel of educators selected Kaltsulas from among five finalists. She receives a $5,000 cash reward and a $1,000 honorarium from the South Dakota Board of Regents to present development seminars to aspiring teachers.
Kaltsulas will also represent South Dakota as a candidate for National Teacher of the Year award next spring.
