Complicated 2016 ballot already causing challenges

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) The longer and more complicated than usual 2016 South Dakota election ballot may cause longer than usual lines on November 8.

Minnehaha County Auditor Bob Litz says early voters have taken as long as 30 minutes to complete the ballot. He's recommending that you get a sample ballot and study it at home to make voting go more smoothly. Litz is also concerned that the ten initiated measures and amendments on the ballot will cause some voters to throw their hands up.

"I think there is going to be a certain percentage of people who are gonna look at that and go the heck with it and I've voted for the president and the representative and county commission and that type of stuff and blow the rest of it off," Litz tells KELO Radio News.

Litz expects a record early voting turnout of up to 20,000, in part because voters know that there is so much to decide on the 2016 ballot and they want to take their time.

Litz says November 8 could be a long day.

"Election night at 7 o'clock, am I going to have a lot of people standing in line and then before the poll can actually close at 7 we'll have to vote all those voters through, so could this translate into later returns, you bet it could," says Litz.
