SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A legislative committee tasked with studying meth abuse over the summer expanded it's focus.
Committee co-chair Mike Stevens of Yankton says prescription drugs were added to the abuse list.
Stevens says legislators are considering making it mandatory for physicians to be a part of system so it's easier to moniter the people who are shopping around and going to many different physicians for prescription drugs.
Stevens, a lawyer, says he's seen the drug abuse cycle.
He says members of the committee have learned how the production of methamphetamine has changed over the years. He says now people are able to make meth at home in plastic bottles.
The Substance Abuse Prevention Interim Study committee meets for the last time today in Pierre.
Stevens says the committee may have one or two bills addressing drug abuse ready for the 2017 session. He says they have also come up with some educational ideas to help combat drug abuse in South Dakota.
