SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - This is Fire Prevention Week at time for families to review their escape plans in the case of fire.
Sioux Falls Fire Marshall Dean Lanier says if your smoke alarm is ten years old it's time to replace it.
Laneir says alarms don't last forever. He says take the smoke alarm down and look at the back for the manufacturer's date. If it's past ten years replace it.
Lanier says to install smoke alarms in every bedroom and on every level of the home, including the basement.
He also advises interconnecting all smoke alarms in the house so if one sounds they all do.
Test alarms monthly by pushing the test button and make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and go to your meeting place.
