Jail space at a premium

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The 19-year-old Lennox man who jumped the fence at the minimum security unit on West Russell Sunday was transferred as an overflow inmate from a packed Minnehaha County Jail.

Warden Jeff Gromer says the incident highlights why the county is considering expanding the jail.

Gromer says the vast majority of the inmates that are moved to the corrections center obviously don't jump the fence.  Still, at the same time, Gromer says it's suprising that it doesn't happen more often.

Gromer says Beck was originally charged with grand theft and was not considered a maximum security inmate.  That's the type of inmate that is moved there primarily on weekends when the jail typically is full.

Beck is now also charged with escape, fleeing police, possessing a concealed weapon and possession of a controlled substance.  He allegedly had a realistic looking BB gun and an X-ACTO knife on his person.
