SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency is using this month to encourage folks to have an emergency supply kit and a family plan.

Leah Ganschow says AARP South Dakota will air a live, disaster preparedness, call-in show Thursday, September 15, on their website on how to prepare for tornadoes and severe storms.

Ganschow says there's an exceptional number of storms that happen the Midwest.  It's good to have an opportunity to get questions answered from AARP experts, as well as from experts in the field of disaster preparedness and management.

Ganschow says preparations now will mean the difference between life and death when split-second decisions count.

She says making a decision to prepare yourself, and your family, for these kinds of disastors allows you to be more fully present.  It allows you to avoid slip-ups.

According to FEMA, families can best prepare for emergencies by talking ahead of time about how to get in contact with each other.
