Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - For the time being, the formal debate on a new $25 million city administration building has been put to rest.
The council voted 6-2 against an ordinance that would have set a non-binding election on the matter for next June. Sponsors Theresa Stehly and Pat Starr were the only two yes votes in the matter.
As has been the case for the last few council meetings, public input on the matter was lively with many taking one more opportunity to remind those in charge that they want a say in how tax money is spent.
Outside of Stehly and Starr, the rest of the council member said that after digesting the issue over the weekend, they felt the ordinance was too little too late. "Not only will the train have left the station by June, it will be almost to its destination," said Greg Neitzert, referring to the date which the vote would have been held next year.
The city is scheduled to begin selling bonds for the project on October 1st.
The Stop the Funding group and the city will meet in court later this month over the city throwing out over 6,000 petition signatures which also called for a special election on the building.
