Court date set for 'Stop the Funding' petition drive

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) A date has been set for a legal showdown involving the $22 million Sioux Falls City Administration Building.

The Stop the Funding Campaign's petition drive for a public vote on the project was stopped cold when the City Clerk's Office rejected the petitions signatures because they were on the wrong form. The form should have contained the city oath, but instead used the state oath.

Judge Mark Salter in Sioux Falls on September 28 will hold a hearing on the city's decision. Activist Bruce Danielson, acknowledging he used the wrong form, says the petitions should still be allowed because the state oath is stronger than the city oath.

The petition drives calls for city voters to decide next June on the fate of the building project.

Bonds to raise money for the project are set to be sold next month in October. Mayor Mike Huether has been urged by some City Councilors to delay the sale. It's unclear what impact a decision by Judge Salter before October 1 would have on the already approved sale of the bonds.
