SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - According to the personal finance website WalletHub, South Dakota is the 9th happiest state in America.
Analyst Jill Gonzalez says South Dakota's lowest rankings are in number of work hours and an even lower ranking in leisure time.
Gonzalez says that means there's not a lot of leisure time spent on an average day in South Dakota. She says you could say that hard work is what makes South Dakota happy.
Gonzalez says South Dakotans get adequate sleep, have a low depression ranking, have the third best income growth rate over the last five years but are just below average in obesity.
WalletHub says South Dakota's divorce rate is 8th, volunteerism rate is 4th and our hedonometer ranking, based on social media comments over the last thirty days, is 14th. One is the best ranking, 25 is average and 51st the worst.
The happiest state overall is Utah while the least happy state is West Virginia followed by Alabama and Kentucky.
