Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - A weekend incident where a man was assaulted while trying to sell an iPhone to someone he met through Craigslist has Police warning of the dangers of those transactions.
Clemens said while it's rare for such incidents to turn violent, people should still use caution.
"Try to do it in a public place. Pay attention, if things just don't seem right you can always leave." Saying you don't have to conduct the transaction on the first try, there's always the option to meet at a later time or safer venue.
Clemens says that you can always utilize the lobby of the law enforcement center during regular business hours Monday-Friday to make such transactions, "As long as you aren't disrupting regular business. We make that space available for the public." Adding it provides a controlled, public environment to make those transactions smooth. Clemens adds that he’s seen several online sales be made at the building, as well as other controlled swaps such as parents exchanging children for weekend visits.
Lastly, Clemens says be mindful of the terms of the deal. "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
