Saturday apartment fire under investigation

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire in an apartment building on East Nye Street.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a call of a structure fire at approximately 9:30pm Saturday night.  The initial report indicated a smell of smoke near the laundry room area.  When fire crews arrived, they found a light haze of smoke in the lower level of the apartment building.

Upon investigation, they located a small kitchen fire in an apartment next to the laundry room and the fire was quickly extinguished.  The occupants were not home at the time of the incident and rest of the building was evacuated for a short time.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The Red Cross responded to assist the residents.

The building was equipped with working smoke detectors but did not have a sprinkler system.  Sioux Falls Fire Rescue reminds citizens to be aware of items placed too close to cooking or heating equipment.
