SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) The Federal Aviation Administration is making it easier for non-pilots to become certified unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operators. The new rules, called "Part 107" allow current certificated manned aircraft pilots to take an online drone course and test to become certified as a lightweight drone operator. Non-pilots can attend a training course, take a test and get certified. The new rules cover good visibility, daytime flights of units weighing under 55 pounds. Altitudes can not exceed 400 feet above the ground.
Local drone merchant Donovan's Hobby Shop has been busy in the UAV market. It sells drones from just 30 dollars to those costing in the thousands. The Sioux Falls store has been very busy over the past months and has increased it's stock to meet demand.
Adam Tebben of Donovan's says several area firms offer the certification training, which can cost up to 700 dollars. After certification, pilots can put their light UAVs to work. Some aviation experts predict there will be more drone pilots than private pilots in the USA within the year.
Amazon and Domino's are conducting research to see if the small dones would be viable as delivery platforms.
