On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area 471st Ave and 260th St. for a disorderly runaway. Information was received that the subject was suicidal. While deputies and South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers were en route, the subject climbed onto the bridge overpass on Marion Road over Interstate I-90.
Prior to law enforcement arriving on scene, four workers with the Department of Transportation (DOT) observed the subject climb onto the outside of the bridge. They alertly diverted traffic and attempted to help the subject. Once a SDHP Trooper arrived, he also attempted to talk to the subject. The subject jumped off the bridge and the workers attempted to break his fall. Once he was down, he attempted to further injure himself by running into traffic. The workers held the subject down while he was actively trying to resist.
The DOT workers continued to assist law enforcement and medical personnel by helping keep him still while medical assistance was rendered. The subject was transported to the hospital.
The MCSO was assisted by several agencies in this incident, to include the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Sioux Falls Police Department, Paramedics Plus, and Crooks Fire/Rescue. One DOT worker received minor scrapes and was treated on scene.
