SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Billie Sutton says he is a pro-life candidate.
However, he had a fundraiser recently at the home of a woman who works at Planned Parenthood, one of only two abortion providers in the state.
The woman, Christina (last name inaudible), gave her affiliation at the Democratic Forum in Sioux Falls August 3.
"Hi, I'm Christina (inaudible) and I work at Planned Parenthood," she said. She then said she had a fundraiser at her house for Sutton.
"I just think he has this sense of calm," Christina said. "We had a fundraiser at our house."
Sutton's campaign says the group South Dakota Forward, not Planned Parenthood, sponsored the event the woman mentioned.
Here's the Sutton campaign's statement on the incident from campaign manager Susan Jones Pranger:
"Senator Sutton has a clear pro-life voting record in his eight years in the legislature. As a public servant, his focus is on bringing South Dakotans together, and people of all political persuasions support his candidacy because he listens and stays true to his values rather than playing politics. The meet-and-greet-style event was hosted by a grassroots civic organization, not any one individual.”
South Dakota Forward describes itself on Facebook as:
"South Dakota Forward exists to promote civic engagement, advocate for awareness on legislative issues, and to champion candidates, initiatives, and ideas that aim to cultivate a more equal and inclusive state for all South Dakotans."
