SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Federal Courthouse in downtown Sioux Falls was evacuated late Monday morning after a white powder was found in an envelope.

It was eventually determined that the powder was not dangerous and the building was again opened to the public.

Scott Rolstad with the U.S. Marshall's Service briefed the media outside the historic courthouse.

"In the world with live in right now, anytime there is a potential threat, I think law enforcement in conjunction with other agencies and fire and hazmat teams, we take these matters seriously," said Rolstad. He said the courthouse was evacuated out of an "abundance of caution."

Rolstad said that Phillips Avenue in front of the courthouse was blocked not because there was any serious threat to surrounding buildings, but to give fire and police vehicles easier access.

Rolstad tells KELO Radio that there were markings on the envelope, but he refused to go into any detail because of the ongoing investigation to catch the culprit.
